The 6th week of a challenge can be an interesting time of motivation or the lack of... In Week 1 and 2, everything is new, exciting and there are a lot of physical changes happening. You still feel the “fire” of your decision to live healthier. Since week 4 is a measure week, the extra indicator of success can offset any waning motivation and reviewing goals can help put things back into perspective. Week 6, however, is just past that point and can feel a little more difficult to sustain that “fire”. The habits you’ve been developing are become easier but it may not be as “exciting” as it once was. So, how do we keep going? How do we continue to exercise, eat our veggies and not eat our weight in cookies when the “fire” seems missing?
The answer could be as simple as the cliché Nike slogan, “Just Do It”. Sometimes we’ll just have to go through the motions and forge ahead until the desire and “fire” begin to return. For example, there are many mornings (too many) that when the alarm goes off, a million excuses go through my head and I just want to roll over to enjoy another hour of sleep rather than changing into my workout gear and getting my sweat on. I guarantee that if I were to only exercise when I “felt” like it, when it sounded “fun” or when I wasn’t tired it would never happen. NEVER! What I have found though, is that every single time I have gotten up and followed the advice of “Just Do It”, even when not internally motivated to do so, I have never regretted it. Never.
So, if you’re starting to feel your motivation lag, don’t let discouragement get the best of you. Keep going! Keep trying! Put one foot in front of the other, one step at a time and you will reach the goals you set for yourself.
